Looking For Someone Other Than Rory or Scottie To Win The PGA Championship

And here we go again with the second of the four majors on the PGA Tour.

Will the PGA Championship be another battle between Rory McIlroy (TaylorMade TP5) and Scottie Scheffler (Titleist Pro V1)?

I’m hoping it won’t be.

I’m looking for someone to emerge whom nobody is expecting.

Whoever it is, I’m going to stick with my theory it will be someone who played in the 2025 Ryder Cup, either for the U.S. or Europe.

Two obvious names are Bryson DeChambeau (Titleist Pro V1x) and fellow LIV Golf competitor Jon Rahm (Callaway Chrome Tour X).

I expected more from both in the Masters. DeChambeau didn’t even make the cut after making a mess of the final hole. Rahm was never a factor.

I chose DeChambeau as one of my two picks in the PG Golf pool. Between him talking about a 3D club he created and his usual Masters thoughts, I was really disappointed with his effort. He really made a mess with his bunker shots.

What can I say I’m bitter.

I think the imminent collapse of LIV Golf will be a big part of the narrative of the PGA Championship, even more so if one of their players win or is in contention at the end.

I’m kind of sick of trying to predict how LIV Golfers will do in the majors. It really is hard to read their form.

But I’m going to try to predict the winner not named McIlroy or Scheffler.

I’m sure Matt Fitzpatrick (Titleist Pro V1x) and Cameron Young (Titleist Pro V1x) will get plenty of support among bettors, but I think they may be trending in the wrong direction.

What about Tommy Fleetwood (TaylorMade TP5x Pix)? It took him forever to win his first PGA Tour event, now it’s when will number two happen? He shot a course record twice on this course at the BMW Championship in 2018. He tied for eighth. What he needs to do is finish.

Keegan Bradley (Srixon Z-Star Diamond) won the tournament in a playoff against Justin Rose (Titleist Pro V1x). Both are in the field.

Billy Horschel (Titleist Pro V1x) and Xander Schauffele (Callaway Chrome Tour) tied for third. Rory was just behind the two.

Ricky Fowler tied for eighth (Titleist Pro V1). He’s on a roll with a T2, T9 and T8 in his last three starts. What about Ricky? How cool would it be if he won? He played last week battling a fever of 103 early in the tournament. He’s made an adjustment to his irons, so that may be the reason for his improved play.

And would of Ludvig Aberg (Titleist Pro V1x). He has five top-10 finishes in his last six starts. Will he finally register a win?

One of the more intriguing players is JJ Spaun (Srixon Z-Star Diamond). He is trending in the right direction – and I like his chances. He had a T5 in the Truist Championship with an impressive weekend performance, preceded by a T14 in the Cadillac Championship. Five starts ago he won the Valero Texas Open. He was a rookie in the Ryder Cup last year, so he fits my angle of a 2025 Ryder Cup player winning.

Patrick Reed (Titleist Pro V1x) and Tyrrell Hatton (Titleist Pro V1x) also merit a look.

If Spaun or Fleetwood win, I’ll be happy.

Very happy.

If DeChambeau or Rahm win, I won’t be.

I just don’t want to see Rory and Scottie win. Just too predictable.

Bridgestone Makes A Key Manufacturing Move

Bye bye Bridgestone. Shocking news that Bridgestone is closing its golf ball plant and test facility in Georgia after 36 years and shifting its manufacturing to Japan on June 30. The bulk of Bridgestone balls are manufactured in Japan anyway. As one of the top five golf ball manufacturing companies, Bridgestone got a huge lift when Tiger Woods became its top player. Chris Gotterup (Bridgestone Tour B X) is its top PGA Tour ambassador now. It will be interesting to see if Bridgestone makes a huge marketing push to tag along to the current popularity of Japanese men's and women's golf.

Korda Registers Impressive Win in the Chevron Championship

Woah, Nelly. That was quite an impressive performance by Nelly Korda (TaylorMade TP5x) in the Chevron Championship, scoring a five-shot victory, winning wire to wire and setting a LPGA majors record with a score of 14-under par after 36 holes. With the win, she vaulted into first place in the world rankings ahead of Jeeno Thitikul (Callaway Chrome Tour X), who surprisingly didn’t make the cut and continued the distinction of the greatest active player not to win a major. More on that later.
