I think the Presidents Cup should start either on Tuesday or Wednesday because in its current format it ends on Sunday, which is the traditional day for the National Football League schedule—notwithstanding games are also being played on Monday and Thursdays. I think the Presidents Cup, which does not have the profile of the Ryder Cup, gets swallowed up the NFL. Unless you have a passing interest in the Presidents Cup, you’re not going to be watching it, which is to say I think the tournament is not high on the list of people watching televised sport. The PGA changed its schedule a few years ago to move the four majors closer together and have the FedExCup playoffs finish before the NFL season begins. I think that was smart thinking. So why not consider starting the Presidents Cup earlier in the week to finish on Friday or Saturday, so it doesn’t conflict with the football. If it finished on Saturday it would clash with NCAA football. Now I know the PGA tournaments start on Thursday and end on Sunday, but it does not have any other major sports with which to contend. If the Presidents Cup ended on a Friday, it could really get sports fans watching—or betting for that matter, given that gambling is really driving eyeballs to televised sports. Yes, Friday is a working day, but why not take a chance, especially for the Presidents Cup? The U.S. teams have dominated this event, so it’s almost expected they will win, which isn’t exactly exciting. It’s actually a fluke if the American squad loses. Yes, it almost happened last week. It took the Americans pulling together on the final day to win almost every one of the singles matches. MEDINAH MAGIC: So, this is twice Medinah has finished with two miracle finishes. The first happened in the 2012 Ryder Cup when Team Europe overcame a 10-6 deficit on Sunday to win by one full point. Hence the Miracle at Medinah. The U.S. won last week with what was considered a comeback of epic proportions. This time the International Team blew a three-point lead on Sunday. Do we call the result the Miracle at Medinah 2? What’s interesting was how rookie players for the U.S. team did not buckle on Sunday. Chris Gotterup ([Bridgestone Tour B](https://www.lostgolfballs.com/golf-balls/brands/bridgestone.html)), Jackson Koivun ([Titleist Pro V1](https://www.lostgolfballs.com/golf-balls/brands/pro-v1.html)) and Jacob Bridgeman ([TaylorMade TP5x](https://www.lostgolfballs.com/golf-balls/brands/taylormade.html)) all won their matches. As I wrote last week, the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup can be platforms for young players to raise their play going forward. I felt strongly that Gotterup would play well. He certainly did with a 3-1-0 record. I wasn’t sure about Koivun, whom I felt was too young to be pushed this quickly, but he finished with a record of 2-0-1. Bridgeman finished 1-2-0, but won when it mattered on Sunday and clinched the win for the U.S.   Once again, Scottie Scheffler ([Titleist Pro V1](https://www.lostgolfballs.com/golf-balls/brands/pro-v1.html)) did not live up to his world number one ranking in the Presidents Cup. He has combined record of 4-6-1. It’s worse in the Ryder Cup at 3-6-3. You have to consider Scheffler’s individual play on the PGA Tour versus team play in these international events.   In the overall scheme of things, it really doesn’t matter. It’s a blip in his career, and there’s no telling what records Scheffler will post on Wikipedia page once he hangs up his clubs. I almost get the feeling that once the season is over, Scheffler wants to spend time with his family and decompress rather than getting jacked up for international play in which he has nothing to prove. MEDINAH’S PGA TOUR FUTURE: I wonder if the PGA will consider Medinah as a regular stop on the tour beginning in 2028 when the schedule will be totally revamped. If the PGA wants to get coverage in cities with a major media presence, Chicago fits the bill.
